The 15 best cities in Europe for cycling

Here’s a list of the 15 best cities in Europe for cycling. From Berlin to Copenhagen, discover the most bike-friendly destinations to explore on two wheels.

More and more European cities are adapting and developing infrastructure to facilitate cycling and the use of personal mobility vehicles (PMVs), promoting sustainable mobility and improving cycling networks. A clear example of this commitment is Paris, where bicycle use has already surpassed that of cars.

A recent study by the German online travel agency Weloveholidays analysed more than 50 European cities to determine which are best suited for cycling enthusiasts. The criteria included the number of bike-sharing stations, kilometres of cycle lanes, the number of rainy days, and the topography of the cities. Based on these parameters, here are the best cities in Europe for cycling, with Berlin, Vienna, and Barcelona leading the ranking.

Index

Urban cycling is not only a fantastic way to stay healthy (both physically and mentally) but also an efficient and sustainable way to explore and experience cities.

In Europe, many cities have embraced cycling as one of the main modes of transport, making it easier for cyclists with dedicated lanes, cycling infrastructure, and a culture that encourages the use of this eco-friendly mode of transport.

As mentioned earlier, the study assessed the cities based on:

  • Number of bike-sharing stations: makes it easier for citizens or tourists to access a bike without having to have one.
  • Kilometres of cycle lanes: The more cycle paths a city has, the safer and easier it is to cycle around.
  • Number of rainy days: Cities with fewer rainy days are more attractive for cycling.
  • Topography: Flatter cities, with less variation between the highest and lowest points, are more comfortable for cycling.
Taking into account these key points, let’s rank the best cities in Europe for urban cycling:

1. Berlin, Germany – The best city in Europe for cycling

Berlin tops the list as one of the best cities in Europe for cycling. With 620 kilometres of cycle lanes and over 3,100 bike-sharing stations, the German capital is a paradise for cyclists. Its flat terrain, with a difference of just 86 metres between the highest and lowest points, makes cycling comfortable and safe. Berlin has become a benchmark for those looking for an urban cycling experience in Europe.

2. Vienna, Austria

Vienna ranks among the best cycling cities, thanks to its impressive 1,654 kilometres of cycle lanes. The city’s extensive bike-sharing system and well-connected cycle routes make it easy to get around without relying on motor vehicles. The blend of culture, historic architecture, and cycling-friendly streets makes Vienna an ideal destination for cyclists.

3. Barcelona, Spain

In the ranking, we can see a Spanish city in the top 3. Oleeee!

Barcelona has established itself as one of Europe’s most bike-friendly cities. The city has around 240 kilometres of cycle lanes (and growing) and a bike-sharing system (Bicing) that makes it easy for locals and tourists to navigate its streets. Its favourable weather year-round and relatively flat routes (mainly in the city centre) make it an ideal city for cycling all year round, placing it among the best cities in Europe for cycling.

We believe that, in addition to the great weather, the extraordinary cuisine must have played a role, don’t you think?

Amsterdam is synonymous with cycling and is globally recognised for its bicycle infrastructure. Who hasn’t seen a photo of its bike-packed parking areas?

The city has more than 500 kilometres of cycle lanes, a well-established cycling culture, and excellent infrastructure and services for cycling.

Although the rainy weather slightly lowers its ranking, Amsterdam remains one of the best places in Europe to enjoy an urban cycling experience.

Fun fact: Did you know that every year, 15,000 bicycles are “fished out” of Amsterdam’s canals? Unfortunately, this turns the canals into a dumping ground. The “good” side? All these bikes are repaired, and many are donated.
